Clean Slate Project: Offering a Second Chance at Life

Clean Slate Project: Offering a Second Chance at Life

What Is the Clean Slate Project?

We are proud to announce our partnership with Feed My Sheep to help Central Texans overcome the barriers associated with their criminal records. Feed My Sheep is a volunteer-based non-profit organization in Temple that was established to provide nourishment and basic human needs through community involvement to the homeless and needy people of Central Texas.

Unfortunately, many of the organization’s patrons face obstacles in life due to their criminal history, such as being unable to get housing and jobs, reunite with their families and move forward from their past mistakes altogether. Greening Law, PC and Feed My Sheep recognized a need in the community and thus decided to collaborate on a solution to address this issue. As a result, we founded the Clean Slate Project.

The Clean Slate Project intends to help give people a second chance at life, and we are honored to help fulfill this mission. With this project, we aim to essentially wipe the slate clean for patrons who are suffering restrictions in life due to their criminal records. To help accomplish this, our Bryan criminal defense attorney will be offering pro-bono legal counsel to Feed My Sheep patrons who are eligible to get their criminal records expunged or sealed.

If you would like to sponsor a patron in need, we welcome you to visit the donate page on the Feed My Sheep website or call the Resource Center at (254) 239-9863.

Expungement & Order of Nondisclosure

Greening Law, PC can help Feed My Sheep patrons, including juveniles, enjoy a fresh start in life via two legal methods: Expunction and nondisclosure orders.

To “expunge” is to “erase or remove completely.” In law, expunction, or expungement is the process by which a record of a criminal conviction is destroyed or sealed from state or federal record. An expungement order directs the court to treat a criminal conviction as if it had never occurred, essentially removing it from a defendant’s criminal record as well as, ideally, the public record.

Another option to enjoy a second chance is to obtain an order of non-disclosure. Unlike expunctions, nondisclosure orders are available to those who successfully complete deferred adjudication for a Class B criminal offense or above. Once granted, the order prevents law enforcement agencies, jails, courts and other public information agencies from releasing arrest information (including juvenile records) to private third parties.

However, the nondisclosure orders do not prevent law enforcement agencies from sharing the information with each other or certain authorized agencies, such as school districts. The arrest information may also be revealed in cases of subsequent criminal prosecutions.

How You Can Help Make a Difference

Although Greening Law, PC will be donating our time and efforts toward assisting qualified patrons, we cannot accomplish this without your help. For instance, filing fees and court costs for expunctions and nondisclosures typically total to about $300. Thus, to help make the Clean Slate Project possible, we depend on donations from those who feel inclined to sponsor patrons for expunctions and nondisclosures.
